XR7-G's for sale September 14, 2019

There were only 619 XR7-Gs built. They were built along side the Shelby Mustang, and were available with every engine and transmission offered in 1968, (except the 427). This was the first Cougar to be a part of the Hertz Rent a Racer program. If you have any information about these rare cats, this is the place to share. The XR7-G registry is maintained by Royce Peterson.

2.79 is the optional ratio for a Cougar with an 8 inch rear end. Notice that this car is a 302-2V.
The Marti reports also states code 2 to be 2.79 Standard ratio. My understanding is a small block car with out A/C would get that ratio if no other was optioned.

Yes a 3.00 axle would have been standard.

All of the Hertz Gs and the X code 390 2v Gs were 2:75 if I am not mistaken.

First I've ever seen or heard of a 2:79.

I notice the Marti states the 2:79 is the "standard axle ratio" yet calls out "Optional Axle Ratio" in the list of options.

Almost. There was one 302-2V XR7-G with a 3 speed manual transmission built that would have been cheaper.

There is a G for sale on BaT - this one used to be owned by a DCC member.

Last I saw it, it was in really nice shape. While you can't really call a Cougar that has the XR7-G option a "low option" car, this G with a 2v F code engine, no sunroof and drum brakes all-around was probably about as inexpensive an XR7-G as one could purchase in 1968.

Looks like the seller (or a previous owner) has addressed some of those issues.

^^^ I find this stuff fascinating -

And how ironic that the 3 speed manual is MUCH more desirable (re valuable) now.

If you think about it, stripping a G of a few options was a way to keep the sticker price down so the dealer could reduce the possibility of it hanging out in the show room too long. Delete AC and PDB and you trim approx $400 off sticker. That's approximately $3,900 on a modern car.

Sold for a very reasonable $19,000. Congratulations to both buyer and seller! Whoever bought the car please contact the G Registry so that we can update ownership information.
